Now that you're weaving rag rugs,
do you have piles of old clothing and fabric
stacked everywhere?
I do.
No, I DID. . . .
I had bags and bags of "supplies". . . .
That's what I tell John when he asks do I really
need more old clothing?
It WAS getting a little out of hand.
You have no idea how many cotton flannel shirts, blue jean shirts and skirts,
well-worn sheets, blouses, and miscellaneous fabric I had stuffed everywhere.
That was problem #1. . . .How and where to store such good "supplies" in a minimum of space.
Problem #2. . . .How to organize the "supplies" so that I could quickly choose
the color and fabric mix I desired.
Normally when I begin a new rag rug, I end up going through bag after bag, pile after pile,
stash after stash--trying to find the fabrics for the look I want. . . .
often giving up in frustration.

One night I was watching a knit and crochet program on PBS.
The skeins of thread were hand-dyed and tied in bundles. . . .
organized into colors. . . .neatly stored in cubbyholes on a back wall.
Brain storm!!!!!
Maybe you already do this. . . .Might not be anything new to you. . . .
I've never seen this done with fabric, but why not?
Over the past few weeks, I've gone through at least five bags of old clothing,
tearing approximately 1 1/2" wide strips,
and bundling each garment's strips together with a self tie--
discarding the left-overs--two trash bags full.
Think of all that space I freed up!
To my surprise, this idea solved both my problems. . . .
I couldn't believe how easy it was to pick and choose the
fabrics and colors for my next rug. . . .
Laying them side-by-side, you get a better visual of color combinations.
An old quilt rack holds my two new projects beautifully!
This one was gathering dust in the garage. . . .now, it's useful again.
The rest of the fabric bundles have found a place in my sewing room--
a much prettier background than big, black trash bags of clothes.
